The objective of this fund is to provide broad exposure to Euro denominated debt of countries of the European Monetary Union. It does so by aiming to track as closely as reasonably possible the performance of underlying indices rather than by active management. The fund is currently aiming to track the Citigroup EMU Government Bond Index through an SSgA managed fund, but may elect to track other appropriate indices. This fund will tend to perform well if interest rates are falling. In a rising interest rate environment, this fund can produce negative results.
There was no change in European Central Bank (ECB) policy in quarter 2, but towards the end of June the bank's President Mario Draghi indicated that it may be able to commence a normalisation of monetary policy soon; this was the catalyst for a late-quarter sell-off in bond markets. German 10-year yields ending June at 0.47%, up 0.14% for the quarter after a rise of 0.22% over the last five days of Q2.Having performed well through much of the quarter, there was a notable sell-off in the final days of June as investors reacted to indications from the European Central Bank that a normalisation of monetary policy could soon commence. In the euro area, German bunds were hard hit as the yield on its 10-year bond rose 22 basis points to 0.47% in the last five days of June; at the start of Q2, the yield was 0.33%. Peripheral eurozone bonds did better, which reflected improving economies and the successful management of bank bailouts in Spain and Italy. Italy 10-year bond yields fell from 2.32% to 2.16% in the quarter. With Irish unemployment at a nine-year low of 6.3% and economic growth the best in Europe, Irish 10-year yields ended June at 0.90%, up 12 basis points in June, but down from 1.00% in the quarter.
